Ms. Mendieta

Hello!  My name is Elizabeth Mendieta. This is my 10th year as a School Social Worker in Jeffco.  My role at Dunstan Middle School is the Social Emotional Learning Specialist (SELS).   Social Emotional Learning has been a passion of mine for the past 8 years because it recognizes the “whole child” therefore allowing for teaching and skill practice in the following Competency Areas: self-awareness, social-awareness, self-management, and social-management.  These skills are necessary for students to succeed in school and out in the real world so they will be productive citizens and happy people!

As the SELS, I develop and guide the Social Emotional Learning Program at Dunstan.  I also assist the staff in teaching ALL students SEL skills weekly in Advise classes, as well as during Core and elective classes.  I am also the coordinator for the Sources of Strength Team which is made up of Peer Leaders and Adult Advisors (Dunstan teachers).  The Sources of Strength Philosophy focuses on the positive factors we have in our lives and harnesses the power of peer networks to create a positive culture that ultimately works in preventing suicide, bullying and substance abuse.  The SOS Team organizes and plans prevention activities.  It, also prepares team building activities, social emotional questions for weekly Restorative Circles, and Social Emotional Lessons.

On a personal note, I grew up in Evergreen, Colorado.  Prior to working as a Social Worker in schools, I worked as a Probation Officer in Weld County and also served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Nicaragua, Central America.  I have been married for 15 years, have 5 children ages 2 to 10 years old.  I love Chinese food, hanging out at Evergreen Lake, listening to Johnny Cash, participating in activities with my church community, and spending time with my family and friends.  For me, life is about helping, learning, and having fun.
